Rugby team gets pokie funding

NEW ZEALAND -- As reported by New Zealand Stuff: "The Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) is heading towards a $1 million injection from pokie machines.

"Figures for August 2006 to July 31, 2007, show the Mainland Foundation paid the CRFU about $728,000 from a total grants payout of $2.3m.

"Other rugby interests got about $140,000 in the round. Figures for the last six months of last year are not yet publicly available, but $1m would have been well exceeded by Christmas at the rate of funding set in the previous year.

"The foundation, the result of a merger of the Canterbury Foundation and Mainland Sport in 2006, added at least eight pubs and hotels to its stable of high-performance venues last year..."
