Room Rates on the Las Vegas Strip

28 September 1999

by Fred Faust

Rates for hotel rooms on the Las Vegas Strip are currently running from $100 to $379 a night on weekends and from $69 tp $275 a night on weekdays.

Price swings are more extreme and more frequent in Las Vegas than in most other cities. They depend on the time of year and what conventions, or special events such as boxing matches, are scheduled.

If you have some flexibility in your travel plans, you're in a better position to obtain good rates. Hotel officials advise that you inquire about rates on several different dates. Or just ask which dates over, say, the next three months, will have the lowest prices.

The following recent room rates at Las Vegas Strip hotels are from a report by analyst Jason Ader of Bear, Stearns & Co., whose staff called all of the hotels on the same day, three weeks in advance. They are based on standard rooms, double occupancy. The weekend date was Oct. 2; the weekday date was Sept. 29.

Harrah's and Luxor offer examples of how much the rates can change from one week to the next. At Harrah's, the price on Sept. 15 was $95. On Sept. 22 and Sept. 29, the same room was $275. At Luxor, the rate was $299 on Sept. 25 and $169 on Oct. 2.

While certain times of the year, such as early December, tend to be slow for the entire city, and rates therefore are lower, some hotels have their own special cycles. One example is the Venetian. As a convention hotel, it's busy from August through November. So its rates during most of the rest of the year will be lower than shown here.
