Romulus Mayor Promises Casino

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Standing near a billboard proclaiming '1300 New Jobs,' Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert vowed Thursday that his town will be the home of a casino and hotel opposite a proposed racetrack near I-94.

"During a news conference on the proposed casino site at the northwest corner of Vining and Wick near Detroit Metro Airport, chairman Kenneth Meshigaud of the Hannahville Indian Community said the 25-acre property would have a 200-room hotel with restaurants, retail stores and a casino with 2,400 slot machines and 90 gaming tables.

"The tribe, based near Escanaba, soon will apply to the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to have the Romulus site declared a trust. If granted, the status would open the way for gaming on the property, said Chris DeWitt, spokesman for the Hannahville community of Potawatomi Indians.

"…In June, a coalition of four tribes announced it wanted to open a casino on the site. Now, only the Hannahville group is involved, DeWitt said…"
