Rohnert Park Project Delayed

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the California Press-Democrat: "A federal environmental review of a proposed casino near Rohnert Park is taking a year longer than initially planned, a sign that the project is likely to be delayed, perhaps well beyond its 2007 opening date.

"Experts in Indian gambling operations said it could be another five to seven years before slot machines are ringing and blackjack cards are dealt.

"…Howard Dickstein, a prominent tribal attorney, estimated it will be at least several more years before federal and state reviews are complete for the Graton Rancheria's project. He said it probably will be five years before the casino opens.

"Even after the environmental review is done, the tribe must apply to have land taken into federal trust for a reservation, as well as obtain a gambling compact from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger with input from nine state agencies. Then it must be ratified by the Legislature…"
