Rockford mayor will support casino

ROCKFORD, Illinois -- As reported by the Rockford Register Star: "Mayor Larry Morrissey says he will back a push for a Rockford casino if aldermen make the first move.

"The City Council is expected to consider a resolution today indicating the city's support for a casino. And if aldermen approve the resolution, the mayor will support it, too.

"...Morrissey effectively ran against a Rockford casino during his mayoral campaign two years ago, when he ousted Democrat Doug Scott. Scott had aggressively sought a casino for the city, and Morrissey cast Scott's initiative as a misplaced priority.

"...He said his focus remains on rejuvenating Rockford's riverfront through a coordinated redevelopment effort, whether that involves a casino or other projects such as his much-touted riverwalk plan..."
