Rockaway Beach Tries Again for Casino

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – As reported by the Springfield News-Leader: "If city officials can work out a contract with a Detroit developer, the Riverboat at Rockaway Beach casino could open in the fall of 2010.

"At a Tuesday meeting attended by about 65 people, Kansas City attorney Doug Stone said he hopes to arrange a presentation by Don Barden, president of Barden Development Inc., within two weeks.

"Next, the Board of Aldermen would vote on the contract.

"If approved, there would be a petition drive to place a constitutional amendment on the November 2008 ballot to permit the casino to be built on the White River in Rockaway Beach.

"…The three-story Rockaway casino would be comparable to the company's casino in Tunica, Miss., with about 40 table games and 1,400 slot machines, Lemberg said. The casino would require an estimated investment of about $144 million, including the cost of the initiative campaign…"
