Rockaway Beach Casino Supporters Try Again

MISSOURI – As reported by the Springfield News-Leader: "The prospect of drawing visitors to Rockaway Beach by putting a casino there is getting another push from supporters who hope to interest a developer in financing another drive to get it before Missouri voters.

"Casino gambling in the state is now limited to areas along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, and Rockaway Beach is on the White River. A proposed amendment to the Missouri Constitution that would have allowed a casino there failed in August 2004, with voters opposing it 56 percent to 44 percent.

"Doug Stone, a Kansas City lawyer representing the Rockaway Beach Board of Alderman, said requests for bids from companies that might be willing to spearhead a petition drive to get the issue on the statewide ballot again were sent out last week. He said they went to about 70 casino companies, real estate developers and others thought to have an interest.

"Proposals, accompanied by a nonrefundable $7,500 application fee, are due July 24.

"…Backers of another vote on a casino for southwest Missouri have their eye on November 2008, when another presidential election will draw far more voters than the last time around…"
