Riverwalk launches art program

MISSISSIPPI -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Riverwalk Casino Hotel today announces a corporate art program for the new development.

The goal of the shareholders of Riverwalk Casino Hotel is to utilize select locations at the facility to provide increased access to the arts and an enhanced entertainment experience for guests and the general public. The program also provides a revenue opportunity for participating artists.

The Riverwalk Art Program features artwork by local and regional artists in a series of ongoing exhibitions.

Riverwalk Art Advisory Panel has been formed to develop and direct the program.

Lyn Kartiganer of Oxford, Mississippi guides the panel as art consultant.

Members include Beth Batton, Mississippi Museum of Art; Keith Alford, artist and gallery owner of Art 621 in Port Gibson; Monika Mayr, Superintendent, Vicksburg National Military Park; Robert Ward, artist, retired gallery director at the University of Louisiana at Monroe; Gwen Magee, textile artist in Jackson; Albert Sperath, Director of University Museums at the University of Mississippi; and Malcolm White, Executive Director of the Mississippi Arts Commission.

Large sculpture is planned for exterior spaces on the northwest corner of the facility. Select interior walls at Riverwalk will feature 2-D art to include paintings, drawings, original prints, photographs, and small relief sculpture.

In speaking about the Riverwalk Art Program, Kartiganer, former director of the Seattle Public Art Program, said, "The owners of Riverwalk are clearly taking a thoughtful approach to this casino, between creating a building that features the River, rather than ignoring it, and by establishing the Riverwalk Art Program. The artwork will enliven and enhance both the interior and exterior spaces, and bring added interest and enjoyment to this multi-purpose project, as well as to Vicksburg."

Greg Carlin, CEO of Magnolia Hill LLC, parent company of Riverwalk Casino Hotel said "Riverwalk ownership is pleased to feature the work of local and regional artists at our new facility. Guests will be treated to a unique visual narrative in a spectacular river setting."

Riverwalk Casino Hotel is a multi-use development and estimates the creation of more than 400 new jobs for the local market. A "riverside park" experience unique to Vicksburg's surrounding area is a premier design element of the development. The riverbank site is south of the Mississippi River bridges, just off Warrenton Road.

Design of the project is executed by Foil Wyatt Architects & Planners, P.A., of Jackson, Mississippi. Benchmark Construction of Jackson, Mississippi is the construction contractor.

Grand Opening for Riverwalk Casino Hotel is scheduled for November, 2008, pending Mississippi Gaming Commission approval.
