Rhode Island Tribe Attacks Governor's Proposal

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Pawtuckett Times: "Responding to Gov. Donald L. Carcieri's call for the Narragansett Indian Tribe's proposed casino to hand over the same percentage of slot machine taxes paid by Lincoln Park and Newport Grand, Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas let loose with a scathing condemnation of Carcieri's anti-casino stance last week.

"Over the past few months, the Narragansett Indian Tribe has been involved in talks with Gov. Carcieri regarding some of our more important issues, including law enforcement and housing development.

"…Last week, Carcieri put forth two pieces of legislation that would make development of the type of resort style casino planned by the Narragansett's and Las Vegas backers Harrah's Entertainment Inc. much less profitable.

"One bill would require any casino to pay the same share of revenues -- 60 percent of the slot machine take -- that Lincoln Park and Newport Grand pay. The other would prohibit any single corporation from owning more than one gambling facility in the state…"
