Rhode Island Town, Tribe Remain Committed to Casino Plans26 August 2004WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Over Portuguese stew and sausages, townspeople cheered for the Narragansett Indian tribe last night and reaffirmed their commitment to the casino that has so far eluded both town and tribe. "In the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society hall, the group heard speeches from politicians and representatives of the tribe and Harrah's Entertainment, all pledging to overcome the casino effort's latest roadblock -- a Supreme Court opinion declaring the most recent proposal unconstitutional. "…The sponsors of the casino legislation, Sen. Stephen D. Alves and Rep. Timothy A. Williamson, both West Warwick Democrats, pledged to sponsor another bill next year. "…In an interview, [Jan L. Jones, a Harrah's senior vice president], said she didn't know how much her company spent on its failed campaign for a casino referendum this year. 'Not enough to make us stop,' she said…" |
