Rhode Island Town Council Opposes Gambling Expansion

MIDDLETOWN, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Opposition to the expansion of casino gambling is gaining momentum in Newport County.

"The Town Council passed a strongly worded resolution last night opposing the expansion of casino gambling in the state, and opposing efforts to put the question to voters in November.

"…It goes on to pointedly oppose the current movement in the State House to put a question on this November's ballot asking voters to approve opening an Indian-owned casino in West Warwick, with the financial backing of gaming industry giant Harrah's Entertainment.

"…Tourism officials throughout the state have expressed concern that a large gambling facility could harm the state's tourism industry…"
