Rhode Island Senate Supports Casino Query10 May 2005PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Pawtucket Times: "Senate President Joseph Montalbano is signing on to the House of Representatives' request that the Supreme Court give an advisory opinion on the constitutionality of casino legislation that is working its way through the General Assembly. "After publicly questioning whether a perceived lack of 'urgency' on the part of the House of Representatives to move on the request and other casino-related legislation indicated that the Narragansett Indian/Harrah's proposal for a West Warwick gambling hall was not a priority, Montalbano announced his support for the Supreme Court request Monday, a week after the House passed its resolution. "…Senate spokesman Greg Pare said the request for an advisory opinion is properly before the Supreme Court now because of the House resolution that passed 42-26 last week, so there is no need for the Senate to pass a resolution of its own. "…Gov. Donald L. Carcieri's office criticized the House request for an advisory opinion two weeks ago. Spokesman Jeff Neal said the bills introduced in the House by Rep. Timothy Williamson and in the Senate by Sen. Stephen Alves, both of West Warwick, were obviously flawed…" |
