Rhode Island Lawmakers to Present Casino Referendum2 February 2005RHODE ISLAND – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Backers of the casino that Harrah's Entertainment and the state's Narragansett Indians are seeking to build in West Warwick say they are within days of introducing new legislation to allow a voter referendum on the proposal, perhaps as early as this year. "As drafts of the new bill were being circulated among key lawmakers yesterday, Rep. Timothy A. Williamson, D-West Warwick, said the reworked bill seeks to remove the constitutional issues, raised in a state Supreme Court advisory opinion, that thwarted a vote last year. "…Williamson said he hoped the expansion at Foxwoods and the introduction of bills to allow slot machines at Massachusetts tracks would help convince casino opponents here that 'people in this region love to gamble,' and sitting still puts Rhode Island's gambling revenue in increasing jeopardy…" |
