Rhode Island lawmaker proposes 24 hour casino9 July 2007PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island -- As reported by the Providence Journal: "State Sen. Paul E. Moura is asking General Assembly leaders to convene a special hearing this summer on the idea of allowing 24-hour gambling at Twin River and Newport Grand. "Because the proposal could mean more gambling revenue for the state, 'we cannot afford to wait,' Moura, D-East Providence, said yesterday. "Lawmakers batted the idea around in the closing days of this year's legislative session, but the leadership ultimately opted not to take up the proposal at that late hour. "This year's state budget includes more than $271 million in revenue from the video slots at Newport Grand and the former Lincoln Park, now known as Twin River. Citing 'estimates received from lobbyists,' Moura wrote that the state could gain $17.5 million annually by allowing Twin River to remain open around the clock on weekends and holidays only. Apply the same policy to Newport Grand, and the boost to state revenues would be 'possibly $25 to $30 million' in all, Moura wrote..." |
