Rhode Island Governor Presents Gambling Legislation

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported Woonsocket Call: "Still opposed to a proposed casino, but protective of the state's two existing gambling parlors, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri is putting forward two pieces of legislation that would act to keep a casino at bay:

"One bill would require any casino to pay the same share of revenues -- 60 percent of the slot machine take -- that Lincoln Park and Newport Grand pay.

"The other bill would prohibit any single corporation from owning more than one gambling facility in the state.

"The governor's proposals come on the heels of a poll conducted by Lincoln Park that found nearly 60 percent of Rhode Islanders favor a casino, but 75 percent said it should pay the same gaming tax as Lincoln and Newport.

"…Carcieri said his bill to require equal taxes from a casino and the slot parlors would 'level the playing field' between Lincoln and Newport and any new casino…"
