Rhode Island Democrats Back Casino Proposal

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Associated Press: "Senate Democratic leaders are backing a proposed constitutional amendment allowing a casino to be built in West Warwick.

"Senate President Joseph Montalbano, D-North Providence, on Wednesday said the proposed amendment is a way around Gov. Don Carcieri's legal challenge to a referendum question on the proposed casino.

"…Carcieri also vetoed a referendum question and said it violates the state constitution because Harrah's Entertainment Inc., rather than the state, would operate gambling at the casino…"
