Rhode Island Councilman Switches Sides18 August 2004WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Councilman Leo J. Costantino Jr., a Republican who has repeatedly voted in favor of allowing a casino here, said last night that he will no longer support any casino proposal for the West Warwick Industrial Park. "Costantino said the town has wasted too many years pursuing casino gambling. The most recent disappointment came Friday, when a Superior Court judge voided a statewide casino referendum set for November. "…If the town had encouraged industrial development in the park, it might now be reaping the tax revenue from new businesses there, he said. Instead, development has been stalled by the unresolved casino issue, and some of the land remains under option to casino developer Harrah's Entertainment. "Costantino's switch leaves the council split 3-2, with the majority still in favor of the casino. The other casino opponent is Republican Mark R. Fleury of Ward 5, where the casino would be located. "…Costantino said he has heard more concerns about the casino during this election season than he did during his first council race, in 2002. "…Costantino's comments came after the council canceled a scheduled meeting in Town Hall last night because of crowding concerns…" |
