Rhode Island Casino Vote Approved9 August 2006RHODE ISLAND – As reported by the Providence Business News: "A federal judge, citing the public interest, Tuesday ruled that a statewide referendum on the proposed Narragansett Indian Tribe casino in West Warwick may go forward. "The Town of Johnston and its own prospective casino partner, Ajax Gaming Ventures LLC, had filed a lawsuit July 21 in U.S. District Court, Providence, asking the court 'to restrain the [R.I.] Secretary of State from placing on the statewide ballot … the Resolution passed by the R.I. General Assembly for a Casino in West Warwick to be owned and operated by the Narragansett Indian Tribe and its 'chosen partner.' ' "The plaintiffs named that partner, Harrah's West Warwick Investment Co. LLC,along with the Narragansetts and R.I. Secretary of State Matthew Brown as defendants in the lawsuit. "Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith ruled that the November vote can go forward. His ruling does not end the legal battle, however, and hints that the Narragansetts eventually might lose..." |
