Reverend Jackson, Workers Rally at Aladdin

LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Associated Press: “The Rev. Jesse Jackson and a sea of workers rallied in front of the Aladdin megaresort Wednesday to try to force casino management to recognize its recently formed union.

"`We will win this fight at the Aladdin,’ Jackson told a swelling crowd of more than 1,000 people demonstrating on the Las Vegas Strip. `The right to organize is the American promise. We will prevail.’

"Members from the local Culinary Workers Union and the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees descended on the Aladdin about 4 p.m. and made themselves heard.

"…Chris Bohner, a spokesman for the Culinary Workers Union, said Aladdin employees only want job security, decent pay and better health benefits.

"Bohner said a majority of the 3,000 Aladdin employees are scared they will lose their jobs when it officially becomes the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

"…Bohner, whose union represents porters, food servers, bartenders, house keepers and cocktail waitresses, said Aladdin has been inflexible when it comes to dealing with the union.

"…Aladdin management defended the hotel-casino's practices, and said the employees have been treated well in difficult times. The $1.4 billion Aladdin opened in August 2000 and filed for Chapter 11 protection about a year later…”
