Revere plans casino hearing21 December 2006REVERE, Massachusetts – As reported by the Daily Item of Lynn: "The City Council plans to schedule a public hearing next year on a proposal allowing casinos to be built on two local racetrack sites. "The council could set a date for the hearing at its next meeting on Jan. 8 — setting the stage for a debate on whether gambling or development are the best future uses for economically struggling Wonderland Greyhound Park and Suffolk Downs. "The city just picked a developer to build a $485 million project over the next 13 years across from Wonderland on the other side of the Wonderland MBTA station. " But Wonderland President Richard Dalton said introducing gaming at four Massachusetts tracks could generate $500 million in revenue a year. A 2003 state study more than doubled that revenue forecast. " Ward 4 Councilor George Rotondo's proposed zoning change allows casinos offering slot machines, blackjack, craps, roulette and other wagering games to open at Wonderland or Suffolk Downs…" |
