Retirement Won't Affect Penguins' Bid for Casino, Lemieux Says

PITTSBURGH -- As reported by the Post-Gazette: "Mario Lemieux says his decision to retire will have no impact on the Penguins' bid to win the state license for the Pittsburgh slot machine casino.

"The Penguins have teamed with Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. on a $1 billion plus plan to build a new arena and casino and to redevelop the lower Hill District. It includes $290 million for an arena, $250 million for a casino, and at least $400 million in residential and office development at the Mellon Arena site.

"During the news conference to announce his retirement, Lemieux said he is hopeful the Penguins' proposal will carry the day with the state Gaming Control Board, which will award the license.

"...Last weekend, Gov. Ed Rendell urged the Penguins to come up with a backup plan for funding an arena in the event they don't get the license..."
