Restaurant Owner Dismayed by VLT Removal

CALGARY, Alberta – As reported by the Calgary Herald: "A restaurant and lounge owner who had video lottery terminals removed from her business because they were underperforming says the provincial government has a serious gambling problem.

"Sylvia Inabnit, co-owner of the Swiss Alpine Restaurant in Pincher Creek, had her three VLTs yanked from her lounge on Feb. 5 because the province said the electric bandits weren't making enough money.

"…Inabnit said the three machines generated more than $100,000 a year for the province, and roughly $15,000 for her business. She said she may be forced to lay off staff because of the lost dollars.

"…Jody Korchinski, spokeswoman for the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, said VLTs are 'a limited resource" that can't be wasted when revenues dry up in certain locations.'

"…Retailers with terminals in the bottom two per cent of revenues for three consecutive quarterly periods risk having the machines yanked, she said…"
