Republican Legislators Vow to Fix Slot Law 'Flaws'9 August 2004HARRISBURG -- As reported by the (Harrisburg) Post-Gazette: "The new law authorizing 14 slot-machine casinos across Pennsylvania is only a month old, but some General Assembly Republicans already claim the measure is badly flawed. "So they're vowing to 'fix' it when they return to the Capitol in late September. "'The lust for slot machines overcame the desire for good government in this case,' contended one outspoken critic, state Rep. John Maher, R-Upper St. Clair. "'The anti-corruption provisions in the new slots law are like an ill-fitting set of dentures,' he said. 'They may look good at first glance, but they don't get the job done.' "...The gaming board, which will start work in October, is a powerful new agency that will award all 14 casino licenses and regulate operations at all the gambling parlors. "One provision especially being targeted by critics is the one that allows legislators -- and other state and local elected officials -- to own up to 1 percent of an individual casino or 1 percent of the stock in a gambling company. "...The bill doesn't address legislators' involvement in two other major elements of casinos -- companies that manufacture slot machines and supplier companies that act as middlemen between the manufacturers and the casino operators..." |
