Report: UK Pubs, Bingo, Arcades Threatened2 March 2004UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Manchester News : "Many pubs, bingo halls and amusement arcades could close as a result of a shake-up of gambling laws, according to a report published today. "The changes will also lead to an increase in the number of problem gamblers, the study concludes. "…The report from the Henley Centre, a leading marketing consultancy, predicts the number of casinos will almost double from 122 to 241, including five resort-style venues. "…But it warns the combination of casinos and restrictions on the number of fruit machines allowed could lead to the closure of 1,000 pubs. "…Ray Stone, a director of The Henley Centre, said: 'The national figures hide a variety of local impacts which, although they could be positive in term of new gambling venues, could also be negative in terms of closures of bingo clubs and pubs and their associated implications.'…" |
