Report: Rhode Island, Massachusetts Gamblers Drop $1.1 Billion in Connecticut

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Woonsocket Call: "Gamblers from Rhode Island and Massachusetts drop more than $1.1 billion dollars each year at the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut, a new study reported Monday.

"According to Professor Clyde W. Barrow from the Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Bay State residents spent $829 million at the two casinos in 2003, while Rhode Islanders spent more than $301 million. On slot machines alone, Barrow found, Massachusetts residents spent $466 million and Ocean State gamblers $169 million as part of the nearly $1.6 billion the Indian casinos collected in combined slot revenues.

"…'Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are prime examples of economic development initiatives that, once fully operational, now serve as tourism and hospitality magnets for the rest of the region,' Barrow added.

"…With the state of Connecticut taking 25 percent of the slot machine revenue at the two casinos, Barrow's report states, Rhode Island gamblers contribute about $42 million to the Nutmeg State's coffers, with Massachusetts bettors chipping in $116 million…"
