Report: Massachusetts tribe should get casino license8 August 2008BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Standard-Times: "The state can't ignore the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe's Indian gaming rights. "That was a central message in a report by Spectrum Gaming Group, an internationally known consultant, on Gov. Deval Patrick's proposal to license three commercial casinos. The administration released the report Thursday. "If the state approves casino gambling, Spectrum recommends the state grant the Mashpee Wampanoag one of three commercial casino licenses. If that can't be done, Spectrum said the state should consider negotiating a compact for an Indian casino that gives the tribe exclusive rights to casino gambling in Southeastern Massachusetts in exchange for an annual fee. "Otherwise, if the state legalizes commercial casinos, the tribe would have the ability under federal Indian gaming law to open its own Indian casino. The tribe has applied to take land in federal trust for a casino in Middleboro. "...The tribal concern was an important issue, but just one of many raised in the 301-page report. The Patrick administration commissioned the $189,000 Spectrum study last winter to answer critics of the governor's plan..." |
