Report: Gambling, Sailors Don't Mix

ILLINOIS – As reported by the (Illinois) Daily Herald: "Waukegan's bid to build a casino about 4 miles from Great Lakes Naval Station would be a dangerous combination, according to a University of Illinois professor who authored a report on military gambling problems.

"John Kindt, a business administration professor who completed the report late last year, said Waukegan's casino plan is inappropriate because it's too close to Great Lakes. He said it would be similar to an on-base casino.

"Kindt said gambling addicts usually lose their focus at work and problem military gambling poses a national security threat.

"…Kindt's report concludes the military should get rid of video gambling devices on nearly 100 overseas bases and posts. He said making a casino off-limits to sailors if problems develop in Waukegan sounds good only in theory.

"…Kindt's 27-page paper, which he said was not commissioned by any special interests, incorporated a Defense Department study on military gambling in 2001. At least 2 percent of U.S. military personnel were pathological gamblers in 2001, according to the department. That is compared to .77 percent to 1.6 percent for the civilian population…"
