Report: BC Gambling Needs More Scrutiny21 July 2005BRITISH COLUMBIA – As reported by the Vancouver Sun: "The provincial government must apply greater scrutiny to the province's $2-billion gambling industry in order to maintain public confidence that government regulators and casino operators are free of corruption, Auditor-General Wayne Strelioff recommended in a report released Wednesday. "…Strelioff said the B.C. government is 'adequately managing' risks to gaming activity in the province's casinos -- including making sure that operators "meet high standards of honesty," that gambling equipment operates fairly, that gambling activities are conducted honestly and that the province gets its correct share of revenue. "If it fails to meet this responsibility, he says, organized criminals may move in, and the public lose confidence in the industry -- at considerable expense to the province's tax base. "The report focuses on casino gambling. It is titled Keeping the Decks Clean: Managing Gaming Integrity Risks in Casinos, and makes 13 recommendations intended to maintain the system's integrity. "Strelioff said the government has 'the challenging task' of ensuring the integrity of gambling in the province's casinos, including minimizing the risk of 'error, criminal exploitation and employee dishonesty.'…" |
