Reno Security Guard Sought in Theft May Have Been Bored

```They're probably just doing it to add a little excitement to their lives,’ Shay McCray told the Reno Gazette-Journal. `They're not crazy. They're not dangerous.’

``McCray's mother, Lannie Stovall, is accused of helping her roommate, Muriel Rucker, pull off the midnight heist early Friday at the Club Cal Neva-Virginian Hotel Casino.

``…In the weeks before the heist, Rucker seemed to become increasingly bored with her job, McCray said.

``…Casino surveillance tapes show that Rucker picked up two metal boxes packed with $148,500 in cash from the main cashier cage about 12:45 a.m. Friday and wheeled them out along her normal route to the casinos vault, police said. But along the way, she stepped outside with the money and handed it off to a friend, who police suspect was Stovall.

``…Rucker then walked back in to the casino and casually exchanged her radio battery in front of her supervisor. Minutes later, she disappeared. She had only been on shift for about 30 minutes.

``…Rucker had worked at the casino since January. She passed background checks by Reno police and a private investigation firm used by the Cal-Neva despite a series of felony arrests for drugs and a vehicle burglary in the 1990s.

``None of those arrests resulted in a conviction, which may be why the background checks did not pick up on them, Cal-Neva Security Director Mike Thomas said.

``He described Rucker as friendly and reliable. She had only a few tardiness complaints on her disciplinary record at the casino.

``…The two suspects have been companions for about seven years, traveling back and forth between Las Vegas and Reno. But they didn't pack any clothes before disappearing from their apartment…”
