Reno Fireworks Up in the Air

RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "With New Year's Eve less than three weeks away, representatives of several casinos that have sponsored downtown fireworks in the past said Thursday they were unsure whether there would be a show this year.

"It seems to be a pattern: last-minute debate over who will pick up the cost of fireworks for July 4 and New Year's Eve.

"Fireworks were nearly canceled last New Year's Eve when officials from Silver Legacy Resort Casino and Harrah's Reno said they would not help pay for the show. But casino officials changed their minds after a public outcry and intervention by Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.

"…For this New Year's, at least three of six past sponsors of fireworks downtown — the Eldorado Hotel Casino, Circus Circus Reno and Club Cal Neva — have set aside money for show. Officials with those casinos said they were waiting to hear what other casinos would decide.

"…Roxanne DeCarlo, marketing manager at Fitzgeralds Casino-Hotel, said it appeared fireworks would be canceled this year…"
