Reno Council Approves Casino Planning Changes

RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno-Gazette Journal: "The Reno City Council approved planning changes late Wednesday that will allow Station Casinos to build a $500 million hotel-casino at the junction of Mount Rose Highway and Virginia Street.

"In the 6-1 votes, Mayor Bob Cashell and others said a major destination resort by Station at the Redfield Regional Center will bring more people to town and raise the ante for other hotel-casinos to improve their properties. Councilman Dan Gustin opposed, citing concerns about traffic and downtown.

"If Station Casinos applies for a special-use permit and builds the project, it would be the first major new casino built in Washoe County since the Silver Legacy opened in downtown Reno in 1995. This also would be the first project in Washoe County for the Las Vegas-based company, a major player in the national gaming market.

"Changes considered Wednesday night would prevent multiple casinos from being developed in that area. In listening to area residents, the council agreed the hotel-casino cannot be more than 55 feet tall without a special-use permit. It also wants developers to provide needed infrastructure, such as road improvements, as the project is built…"
