Reno Considers Casino Zoning Changes22 June 2005RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "City officials are considering a rewrite of Reno's zoning-related gambling policies that would, among other things, streamline the process for a Las Vegas-based neighborhood casino operator to build a new project in south Reno. "The change would add the Redfield Campus and Boomtown areas to the list of neighborhoods that are acceptable for unlimited gaming under the policies of the city's master plan. "Reno officials are simultaneously writing a detailed plan for the Redfield Campus area that would give Station Casinos the right to build a hotel casino in the mall under construction at Mount Rose Highway and South Virginia Street. "Critics of the proposal said Tuesday the public and casino operators have been ignored through the planning process. The Reno City Council is expected to take up the issue today. "Reno Community Development Director John Hester said the plan for Station Casinos is more of a realignment than a change because Station Casinos already has an entitlement to build a casino across the street from the mall, just not on the same land. "…The proposal wouldn't affect existing casinos, but no new ones would be allowed outside those neighborhoods…" |
