Religious Coalition Speaks Out Against Nebraska Gambling Initiatives

OMAHA, Nebraska – As reported by the Associated Press: "An Alabama Baptist preacher who has spearheaded anti-gambling efforts in other states is leading a religious coalition in speaking out against two ballot initiatives that would expand casino gambling in Nebraska.

"The Rev. Dan Ireland, a gambling opponent from Birmingham, Ala., was in Omaha on Thursday to rally a newly formed coalition of religious groups in Nebraska against gambling.

"Ireland, who served two terms as the president of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling in Washington, D.C., said that although different religions often take different viewpoints on various issues, he thinks they will come together in opposition of expanded gambling.

"…Two gambling measures are expected to be on the ballot in Nebraska this November. One passed by the Legislature this spring would allow two casinos anyplace in the state.

"The other, likely to be on the ballot after a successful petition drive, would legalize two casinos in Omaha and, unlike the legislative proposal, also would allow about 4,900 slot machines and video gambling machines in bars, restaurants and horse tracks across the state…"
