Red Tape Threatens New Zealand Pokie Funds

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the New Zealand Herald: "Red tape is threatening community funding from pokie machines, says one of the societies which distributes gaming machine profits to charities.

"Pub Charity chief executive Ian Bray said yesterday that the number of gaming machine venues was declining and many more were likely to close in the next 12 months.

"…His view was disputed by the Department of Internal Affairs, which enforces regulations covering gambling machines. Communications adviser Vince Cholewa said that while the number of gaming societies had decreased, the number of machines and profit per machine had increased markedly in the past four to five years.

"Mr Bray said the Gambling Act 2003 placed 'enormous responsibilities' on venue owners, managers and employees. These included considerable fines, for example for not displaying correct signs…"
