Recession putting pressure on Wisconsin tribe5 January 2009ONEIDA, Wisconsin -- As reported by the Green Bay Press-Gazette: "Tough economic times are trickling down to the Oneida Tribe of Indians. "Fewer people are spending money at Oneida Bingo & Casino and more members of the tribe are looking for financial help. "While the casino in Ashwaubenon, a huge part of the tribe's financial success, isn't facing the same type of slowdown that has forced massive layoffs in the gaming industry in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, its numbers are down, general manager Neil Cornelius said. "...In 2006, gaming brought in more than $25 billion to the 225 tribes that have casino or bingo operations in 28 states, according to the most recent data available from the National Indian Gaming Association. "Although the casino has not made major changes in response to the recession, Cornelius said it is working to diversify offerings by putting an emphasis on concerts and other entertainment events that aren't related to gambling..." |
