Rain, snow moving into Las Vegas Valley

17 December 2008

Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Take a heavy coat and an umbrella on your way out today. And if you're headed to the mountains, don't forget the snow chains.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, saying the Las Vegas Valley will get rain, at least an inch of snow at the 2,500-foot elevation level and as much as 5 inches of snow in higher elevations.

The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. today through 4 a.m. Thursday and covers northern and central Clark County, including Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Mesquite, Overton, Moapa, Pahrump, Indian Springs, Desert Rock and Amargosa Valley.

"Significant snowfall is expected again over Clark County at elevations above 3,500 feet ... including the northwest parts of the Las Vegas Valley," the weather service said in the advisory.

"Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches will be possible above 3,500 feet ... And elevations between 2,500 and 3,500 feet could also see accumulations of 1 to 3 inches."

That means areas out by the 215 Beltway in the western part of the city and areas in the Red Rock Canyon area could see more snow on top of what they had Monday.

The weather service said motorists should use caution when traveling on snow-covered roads and during periods of heavy snow, when visibility is limited.

This morning's temperatures were starting out at 37 degrees in Las Vegas, with the wind chill at 32 degrees, according to readings at McCarran International Airport.

Today's forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of precipitation, with cloudy skies, a high near 41 degrees and winds 7 to 10 mph, the weather service said.

Rain is also likely tonight, mainly before 10 p.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 34 degees, according to the forecast.

The weather service said the rain and snow showers will linger through Thursday morning before the storm passes through.

But another storm will move through Friday and Saturday. And still another storm is expected Monday and Tuesday.

However, those two storms are expected to produce less precipitation, but could bring ssome high winds, the weather service said.
