Racing Industry on Alert9 August 2004ALBANY -- As reported by the Albany Times Union: "Officials in the horse racing industry were surprised and suspicious about the abrupt call for a Senate hearing Tuesday in Albany on the future of the industry. "Senate Racing & Wagering Committee Chairman William Larkin said he invited officials with the New York Racing Association, breeders and horse owners to the hearing. He also wants testimony from Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and state Comptroller Alan Hevesi, who have been highly critical of NYRA, although their aides were unaware of the invitation. "...Although several racing observers suspected the hearing was called to help with Magna Entertainment's attempts to gain NYRA's state franchise to run races, Larkin said he has not been contacted by the Canadian firm's representatives..." |
