Racetrack Slots Get New Focus in New Jersey21 January 2004TRENTON, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Examining the addition of slot machines at state racetracks would be top priority for a newly proposed Senate committee that would oversee legislation involving the state's casino, horse-racing and tourism industries. "Senate President Richard Codey, D-Essex, a longtime advocate for the horse-racing industry, proposed the formation of the Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee on Tuesday. "…The announcement comes as the state continues to broker an agreement for a casino-funded bailout plan to save horse racing in the state without installing racetrack slots. "…Racetrack supporters blame competition from New Jersey's casino industry for a decline in horse racing revenue and claim the industry will go under if competing states add video lottery terminals at racetracks and New Jersey does not.
