R.I. chief wants to revive slots casino plan

CHARLESTOWN, Rhode Island – As reported by the Narragansett Times: "Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas is reviving the idea of a slots casino on tribal lands in Charlestown, and said Thursday that he wants to meet with the Rhode Island Congressional delegation in Washington sometime in February to that end.

"…The plans for a $50- to $100- million casino similar to facilities in Lincoln and Newport come on the heels of an overwhelming defeat by voters of a proposal to build a full gaming casino in West Warwick that would have been funded and owned by Harrah's. : Narragansett The proposed casino in Charlestown would be built on 110 acres behind tribal administrative buildings on Route 112. The plans are contingent on overturning a legislative amendment introduced by the late Sen. John Chafee in 1996 and passed by Congress, prohibiting a gaming facility…"
