R.I. casino smoking exemption may be lifted

8 March 2007

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Newport Daily: "A local lawmaker has introduced legislation that would lift the exemption for the state's two video-slot parlors from the statewide workplace smoking ban.

"When the General Assembly approved the ban in 2004, it exempted Newport Grand and the Lincoln Park because it feared a loss of gambling revenue from the two state-operated gambling halls. The smoking ban went into effect on March 1, 2005.

"State Rep. Amy G. Rice, D-Portsmouth, said it's not fair to ban smoking in restaurants and bars while giving an exemption to Newport Grand and Lincoln Park.

"…Rice said she would be willing to amend the bill so it expires in a year to see if there is a significant drop in state revenue."
