R.I. Casino Foes Speak Out

MIDDLETOWN, Rhode Island – As reported by the Newport Daily News: "Former Gov. Lincoln Almond and the Rev. Eugene J. McKenna are united in their opposition to a casino in Rhode Island, but the politician and the priest offered conflicting opinions on gambling Monday during an economic forum sponsored by the Newport County Chamber of Commerce.

"'Gambling doesn't produce a thing,' Almond said.

"'Gambling creates something,' McKenna countered. 'It creates losers, big-time losers.'

"The two joined Kevin Cameron, general manager of the Radisson Airport Hotel Providence and a representative of the Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association, in opposing a referendum that would amend the state constitution to allow the Narragansett Indian tribe and its partner, Harrah's Entertainment, to build a casino in West Warwick. Rhode Island voters will decide the issue in the Nov. 7 election.

"…Keith W. Stokes, the chamber's executive director, said the expansion of gambling in Rhode Island is one of the most critical issues facing the state. It was important for the chamber's board of directors to hear both sides of the debate before taking a position, he said…"
