Quechan Tribe Compact Ratified

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "A poor Imperial County Indian tribe that had been caught up in a test of wills between the governor and some of the state's richest tribes finally appears on the brink of securing a new gambling agreement it signed last summer.

"Ending a 14-month wait with unusual speed, the Assembly voted to ratify a new compact Thursday that would permit the Quechan tribe to build a new mid-sized casino in Imperial County.

"The 50-1 vote sent the compact to the Senate for what is widely expected to be routine approval. Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata said last week that he believed the compact for one of the state's largest tribes would receive broad support in the Senate.

"…The new gambling compact authorizes the 3,300-member tribe – which has a 67 percent unemployment rate – to expand its California casino from 350 to 1,100 slot machines. The agreement had been blocked in an Assembly committee since shortly after it was unveiled in June 2005…"
