Quechan casino construction proceeds23 October 2007CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Yuma Sun: "Bulldozers roared into action Monday at the building site of the Quechan Indian Tribe's controversial casino project, which got the green light to build last week. Tribal elders opposed to the project vowed Monday that they will not give up their fight to protect the building site, which protesters consider sacred and claim is scattered with precious cultural artifacts. "...Tribal residents belonging to the group Pipa A'Koots, founded by a handful of tribal elders, have fought for months against building the casino west of Yuma near Pilot Knob. "...Tribal officials have acknowledged the discovery of certain artifacts, but insist they are located outside the casino project's area of impact. "...The $200 million Quechan Casino Resort will feature 265,000 square feet of space, including a casino, a 166-room hotel, an events center, restaurants and various water features. Tribal leaders have said they hope to finish the project by November 2008..." |
