Quebec Casino Draws Opposition5 December 2005QUEBEC – As reported by the Montreal Gazette: "Social activist groups across Quebec are demanding that the provincial government hold a legislature committee hearing into the construction of a casino and entertainment complex in Point St. Charles. "The groups oppose the $1.2-billion project, claiming it will increase poverty in the low income neighbourhood by enticing welfare recipients to spend their money on slot machines and lottery games. "…Loto-Quebec announced this year that it wants to build a new casino/entertainment complex on CN Railway land bordering the Lachine Canal and the St. Lawrence River at the foot of Peel St. near Bridge and Mill Sts. "The Cirque du Soleil would be partner in the project, which would include hotels, restaurants, a marina, a spa and a trade centre. "Loto-Quebec claims the new centre would draw more foreign tourists. Now, only 11 per cent of casino patrons are tourists. "The gambling corporation claims its own surveys show a majority of residents of Point St. Charles support the project…" |
