Quarter of Casino Workers Seek State Help

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Low wages and high insurance premiums leave many hospitality workers at four northwest Indiana riverboat casinos turning to state subsidies for family health care needs, a union-sponsored study shows.

"Nearly one-quarter, or 24 percent, of the workers at riverboat/hotel complexes said they had enrolled their children in Hoosier Healthwise, said Jane Kiser, an assistant professor of labor studies at Indiana University Northwest.

"Another 17 percent -- about one of every six -- have no health care coverage at all for their children.

"Many riverboat workers choose to either forgo any insurance coverage for their children, or to enroll them in Hoosier Healthwise, a state-subsidized program that provides health insurance for children," Kiser's report said..."
