Punters blow even more on pokies in Queensland

QUEENSLAND, Australia -- As reported by The Courier Mail: "Queenslanders blew more than $478 million on the pokies in the past three months, in the worst quarterly result so far this year.

"The latest figures from the State's Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation show nearly 44,000 poker machines in Queensland clubs and hotels have swallowed up a collective $1.36 billion so far this year.

"The figures come on the eve of the Productivity Commission's draft report on the social and economic impacts of gambling in Australia, The Courier-Mail reports.

"The report, to be released in Canberra today, is expected to focus on problem gambling.

"...But in one of more than 260 submissions to the current inquiry, the clubs industry argued problem gambling involving poker machines had decreased, citing declining demand for counselling services..."
