Pubs and Clubs Gain Wide Reprieve from Pokies Shutdown

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: ``More than 100 pubs and clubs have been given an exemption on shutting down poker machines for six hours every day.

``Hundreds of hotels have also been allowed to keep machines running in the early morning when others shut theirs and can instead shut down them at a time when the pub is closed anyway.

``Dozens more venues are expected to apply for a reduction of the shutdown hours from next month, when the rules change and applications no longer have to be supported by their local council.

``Critics say these exemptions are weakening measures to help problem gamblers. Since May all poker machines in hotels and clubs were supposed to be shut down from 4am to 10am…"
