Public Meetings Look at Oregon Casino Plans

OREGON – As reported by the Oregonian: "Portlander Tammy Lewis remembers being awed the first time she saw the Columbia River Gorge -- and how equally stunned she felt learning that a casino might end up by the river and lush trees.

"Marilyn Hjulstad, who lives in Gresham, reasons that a casino in Cascade Locks would boost the lackluster economies of the city and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, which wants to build the resort, without spoiling the gorge.

"Besides, a casino there would be just 35 miles from her home.

"…The two women were among more than 100 people who turned out Monday evening for the third of five public meetings sponsored by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. Bureau officials are studying whether to approve an off-reservation casino roughly 40 miles east of Portland.

"They want comments to help identify what issues to explore in a draft environmental impact statement, alternative casino sites to consider, and the benefits and drawbacks to the Cascade Locks proposal. The draft should be ready for public review this winter, with a bureau recommendation as early as next spring…"
