Proposed Casino Spurs Modern Fight4 July 2005GETTYSBURG -- As reported by the Patriot-News: "Booming cannons, thundering hooves and the rebel yells of charging Confederates echoed yesterday on the final day of the 142nd Gettysburg Civil War Battle Re-enactment. "...A quieter fight is being waged in contemporary Gettysburg against the proposed Gettysburg Gaming Resort and Spa. The casino with 3,000 slot machines is proposed for a 42-acre site just east of the borough. "Proponents say a casino would create 800 full-time jobs, pump millions of dollars into the local economy and complement Gettysburg's historic battlefield, museums, shops and restaurants. "Opponents say it would desecrate the battlefield and increase traffic, prostitution and crime in a region with a family atmosphere..." |
