Problem Gambling Group Calls for Moratorium

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Queensland Courier-Mail: "The head of a group that deals with gambling addicts has called for a moratorium on the issuing of more gaming machine licences.

"Derek Tuffield, who chairs the Gambling Help Services Network, said yesterday the issuing of licences should be halted for three years while the gaming industry completed the process of adopting a new voluntary code of behaviour.

"…He said a code of practice for gambling was launched in May 2002 and was being adopted across Queensland.

"'The code of practice is . . . still working its way through and it'll take up to five years to be fully implemented across the state,' Mr Tuffield said.

"…Clubs Queensland executive officer Damien Massingham rejected the call for a cap, saying clubs needed increased revenue to expand and provide facilities for communities…"
